Cesium

Cesium, represented by the chemical symbol Cs and atomic number 55, is one of the five elemental metals that are liquid near room temperature. Notably reactive, it is part of the alkali metal group on the periodic table. Cesium reacts explosively with water and ice, even at temperatures as low as -116 °C.

Cesium is typically found in the mineral pollucite (a cesium-rich mineral), and its extraction involves a series of chemical processes to produce pure cesium metal or its compounds.

At TXRocks, we pride ourselves on supplying a broad range of critical minerals that catalyze innovation in diverse industries. One such pivotal mineral we offer is Cesium – a soft, silvery-gold alkali metal known best for its role in precision timekeeping and its wide array of scientific and industrial applications.

Critical Usecases

Atomic Clocks

Cesium’s most recognized use is in atomic clocks, the most accurate timekeeping systems in existence. Cesium atomic clocks function based on the vibration frequency of the cesium-133 atom, which is exceedingly regular and precise.

Oil and Gas Drilling

Cesium formate brine is used as a high-density, high-temperature stable drilling fluid in the oil and gas industry. Its use can help to maintain pressure, lubricate drilling equipment, and carry away rock cuttings.

Medical and Scientific Research

Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope of cesium, is used in medical applications, industrial gauges, and in research and development.

Ion Propulsion Systems

Cesium is used in ion propulsion systems for spacecraft due to its ability to ionize readily, generating thrust in space vehicles.

Telecommunications

Due to their preciseness, cesium-based clocks play a crucial role in synchronization in telecommunication network systems.
