Antimony

Antimony, denoted by the chemical symbol Sb (from the Latin ‘Stibium’) and atomic number 51, is a lustrous gray metalloid found in nature mainly as the sulfide mineral stibnite (Sb2S3). Antimony exhibits allotropy, meaning it has different physical forms. The stable form of Antimony is a blue-white metal, but there are also yellow and black allotropes.

Antimony makes a significant chemical contribution through its ability to form stable alloys with a variety of other metals. This alloying capability gives Antimony its wide-ranging applicability.

At TXRocks, we are privileged to contribute to global advancements through our diverse range of critical mineral offerings. Among our catalogue of minerals, Antimony stands out for its unique characteristics and wide range of applications. With its incredible properties, Antimony continues to prove its indispensability in various sectors of industry.

Critical Usecases

Flame Retardants

A significant use of Antimony is in the production of flame retardants. Antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) is used predominantly in this application, due to its ability to increase the flame-retardant properties of materials when combined with halogenated compounds.

Alloys

Antimony is used to improve the hardness and mechanical strength of lead in applications such as batteries, cable sheaths, and solders. In addition, Antimony-tin and Antimony-lead alloys are commonly used in the manufacturing of organ pipes.

Glass and Ceramics

Antimony is used to remove bubbles from glass used in television screens and computer monitors. It also finds application in the ceramics industry as a pigment.

Semiconductors

Antimony is used in the semiconductor industry for some types of infrared detectors, diodes, and Hall-effect devices.

Medicine and Cosmetics

Antimony has been used in medical treatments and cosmetics throughout history. Antimony compounds have been used as a treatment for parasitic infections, and Antimony-laced kohl is still used in some cultures as a cosmetic for the eyes.
