Hafnium

Hafnium, represented by the chemical symbol Hf and atomic number 72, is a silvery, ductile metal that is resistant to corrosion due to the formation of an oxide layer. Found in nature in conjunction with zirconium, it must be painstakingly separated as they share very similar chemical properties.

Hafnium possesses a high melting point and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, making it valuable in high-temperature applications.

At TXRocks, we’re honored to provide a wide array of critical minerals integral to industries around the globe. Hafnium, a lesser-known but invaluable mineral, is celebrated for its exceptional properties and finds applications in everything from nuclear reactors to microelectronics.

Critical Usecases

Nuclear Reactors

Hafnium is used in control rods of nuclear reactors due to its exceptional ability to absorb neutrons without undergoing fission itself.

Microelectronics

Hafnium-based compounds, such as hafnium oxide, are used in gate insulators in the semiconductor industry, enhancing the miniaturization of modern electronics.

Superalloys

Due to its high melting point, hafnium is added to high-temperature alloys used in jet engines and gas turbines, increasing their resistance to heat and wear.

Plasma Cutting

Hafnium’s properties make it a key component in plasma cutting tips, where it aids in focusing the plasma stream to cut metals efficiently.

Lighting

Hafnium is used in the production of certain types of lighting, such as short-arc lamps used in video projectors.
