Iridium

Iridium (Ir) is a hard, lustrous, and incredibly dense metal that belongs to the Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). It is the most corrosion-resistant metal known, even at high temperatures, and is considered one of the rarest elements in the Earth’s crust.

Iridium is found in the 9th group, 6th period of the periodic table, bearing the atomic number 77. It has two naturally occurring isotopes, ^191Ir and ^193Ir, both of which are stable. Iridium forms compounds in various oxidation states, notably +1, +3, and +4, with +3 being the most common.

The metal is mostly obtained as a by-product of nickel and platinum mining. Being highly resistant to wear, it is often alloyed with other metals for applications that require durability and stability.

Critical Usecases

Electrical Contacts

Iridium’s high melting point and exceptional corrosion resistance make it suitable for electrical contacts in devices exposed to high temperatures.

Spark Plugs

Iridium is used to manufacture spark plugs, particularly for the aerospace and automotive industry, due to its outstanding durability and ability to withstand high temperatures.

Cancer Treatment

Iridium-192, a radioactive isotope of Iridium, is used in brachytherapy, a form of radiation therapy for treating cancer.

Crucibles and Special Containers

Thanks to its incredible heat resistance, Iridium is used in making crucibles and other equipment for working with molten metals.

Data Storage

In the electronics industry, Iridium is used in the production of high-density data storage devices.

Chemical Catalyst

Iridium acts as a catalyst in certain chemical reactions, including the Cativa process for making acetic acid.

Timekeeping

In the horology industry, Iridium is used in making precision oscillators in watches due to its stable physical properties.
