Zirconium

Zirconium is an element on the periodic table symbolized as ‘Zr’ and with an atomic number of 40. Its atomic weight is 91.224, and it belongs to Group 4 and Period 5 of the periodic table.

Zirconium is highly reactive in powder form but becomes incredibly resistant to corrosion when formed into an alloy due to the formation of a stable oxide layer on its surface. Zirconium is resistant to most solvents and performs exceptionally well under high temperatures, making it a robust and versatile material for a wide range of industrial applications.

It commonly occurs in the mineral zircon (ZrSiO4), and can be extracted using a process that involves chlorine, sodium, and carbon at high temperatures to produce zirconium tetrachloride (ZrCl4), which is then reduced with magnesium in a more manageable temperature environment.

At TXRocks, we are proud to supply high-quality Zirconium, playing our part in the advancement of key industries and technologies. Our commitment to sustainable and ethical sourcing practices ensures our clients receive the best materials, vital to their respective industries, while supporting environmental and social responsibilities. We welcome inquiries and are always ready to provide further information about our Zirconium offerings or any other critical minerals in our extensive portfolio.

Critical Usecases

Nuclear Power

Zirconium is primarily used in the nuclear industry because of its low neutron-absorption cross-section. Zirconium alloys are used to make the fuel rods in nuclear reactors.

Space and Aeronautics

Due to its high heat resistance, it’s used in space vehicles where high temperatures are produced during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Medical Field

Zirconium-based compounds are used in various medical applications, including dental implants and other prosthetics, due to their biocompatibility and durability.

Chemical Industry

Zirconium is a critical component in many chemical reactions as a catalyst. It’s also employed in manufacturing heat exchangers and piping used in aggressive chemical environments.

Consumer Products

Zirconium compounds are used in deodorants, antiperspirants, and as an opacifier in many cosmetics and skincare products.

Ceramics and Glass

Zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4) is used in the production of ceramics, including glazes, and in glass manufacture to increase resistance to chemical and physical stresses.

Refractory Materials

Due to its high melting point, Zirconium is used in refractory materials and to make crucibles for melting metals.
